Excerpt: Neither of them spoke as they walked to Florida Avenue and turned the corner toward H Street. In five minutes, they were mixed in with the sights and sounds of people, carry-out shops, pawnbrokers, record centers, food markets, more people, and the police of northeast Washington. One of the first areas to burn during the April rage of '68. The empty spaces, where buildings used to be, were now the homes of weeds peeking through dirt and ashes.
